Questions about dorms
Hey, I realize this community is a bit dead, but I thought I would try to get my question answered anyway. :)

I am starting at GSLIS in the spring, and I applied for a dorm. I'd requested North Hall but they had no more space there and so they offered me 5th floor South. They also had Morse Hall 4th floor open and I had heard the rooms there were bigger, so I tentatively asked to be switched to that.

Does anyone have any advice about the dorms, especially North vs. South vs. Morse? Is there a particular building where there are more GSLIS students? Do any of them have any major downsides, like in terms of space issues, bathrooms, whatever?

Advising Day
For those of you who attended Advising Day prior to your first semester at GSLIS, did you find it useful? What did you like best/least?

For those of you who didn't attend Advising Day, do you wish you would have? Why/Why not?

I'm not sure if I'll be able to make it out there next month and just want to know what I might miss out on and get a general idea of what the day is like from people who've experienced it.

Also, I really appreciated all the helpful information about disability + accommodations I received in my last post. Y'all are great.

Thanks again!

Weird question
Hey there.

I was recently admitted to GSLIS and am trying to decide between Simmons and one other school.

My (sorta specific, kinda personal question): Do any of you have disabilities? If so, how are they addressed with the administration and within the classes themselves?

I only ask because I use a wheelchair and am curious as to how well the program/classrooms would be able to accommodate someone like me. My undergrad institution was a cripple's dream (in most ways), so I'm just trying to get a feel for what I might deal with on the Simmons campus as far as physical accommodations and professor understanding.

Any insight, experiences, or suggestions you want to share (in this post or in a private message, if you don't feel comfortable) would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

questions
Hi,
I am attending the GSLIS program in the fall and have had trouble finding information on the number of people actually in the program--about how many are there?  Also, what's the age range of students?

Thanks!

LIS 403
To anyone who has taken LIS 403: Who did you take it with and what did you think about the class? I'm debating between taking it with either Rong Tang or Sheila Denn.

Also: Are there any classes with certain professors that you would definitely recommend? I personally love 407 with Allen Smith. Classes are always fun and he's an amazingly fair grader.

Thanks.

Rooming Woes
Hi everyone!

I was recently accepted for the Fall 08 semester and am extremely excited. The biggest damper on this excitement is the issue of finding a place to live. I would prefer to live in an apartment somewhere, but don't know the Boston area at all. I'm from Iowa and haven't moved around much at all, so I'm used low rent and driving everywhere--not common in Boston, from what I gather. I know that this is somewhat off-topic, but does anyone have advice on finding an apartment and roommates near Simmons?

Health Insurance
Does anyone know how much health insurance through Simmons costs? I can't find any concrete numbers on the University Health Care website.

Any other Summer '08s?
I just got my letter of acceptance yesterday! Anyone else going next summer?

Now I just have to get all my school supplies out of storage :)

New Student; wants stories/advice
Hi! I'm starting in January and I'd love any kind of advice about GSLIS life at Simmons. I'm going to be a full-time student and I'm living in the dorms. I'd especially love any advice for living in Boston (specifically, but not limited to, the dorms) in winter. I'm a California girl, and I've never lived in a place where snow actually piled up on the ground, so I have no idea what to expect. As for classes, I don't have any specialization that I'm interested in yet, so i just registered for 404 and 407 and 423(Storytelling). I'm also on the waitlist for 415, since my advisor told me that 4 classes is a bit heavy, but not *that* heavy. Has anyone here ever taken 4 classes in one term? Considering costs and such, I'd like to graduate in three semesters.

Thanks!

When did you hear?
Can anyone tell me what the turnaround time is from the application due date for Simmons? I'm applying for the summer term next year and just want to know when I should start freaking out :) hehe

archives/history thoughts?
Hi!

I am really interested in attending Simmons next fall--specifically the dual history/archives program. I am in the process of getting ready to apply, but I have no sense of how competitive it is and was wondering if anyone had an idea of what percentage of applicants Simmons accepts. I went to a good liberal arts undergrad college, my GPA is above a 3.5 and I did well on the GRE. But I have no library experience (I've been doing fundraising since college). I know there's no guarantee, but do you think that makes me a competitive applicant?

Also, is there anyone out there who is/was in the dual degree program? I'd love to hear any thoughts/ advice for someone in my shoes.

Thanks!

Advice for new students?
I was recently accepted to Simmons GSLIS for Spring 2008.  I will be going to school part-time while working full-time in a hospital as a Data Analyst.  I plan to take only one course in the spring to get my feet wet.  Any advice on which of the core classes is best to start with?  Also, any recommendations for outstanding professors (such as Candy Schwartz)?  Any other advice for new students?  Thanks.

Introductions and such
Just to introduce myself: I'm Heather, and I started at GSLIS in fall 2005; finished my coursework in fall 2006, and graduated in May 2007. I went through the archives/records mgmt concentration, and I'm happy to answer questions about it or GSLIS in general. I'd love to catch up with former classmates, and meet other GSLIS people! I no longer live in MA-- after graduation, I accepted an archivist position at a mid-sized university outside of New England.

Feel free to introduce yourself, too!

Welcome
I'm a recent Simmons GSLIS alum, and I've noticed over the past few years that there are periodically questions in the various LIS-related communities here on LJ about Simmons (as well as other schools, of course). Anyway, I thought that I would set this community up as a place for Simmons-related questions as well as a place for current and former GSLIS students to chat and get to know each other. I know that there are other Simmons GSLIS people around these parts, so please join in!
